Japan-based global logistics group Nippon Express and its subsidiary Nittsu NEC Logistics have been appointed as freight forwarders under the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's FY2026 Corporate Scope 3 Logistics Sector Measures Promotion Project, covering air and ocean transport, with effect from 2 June.

According to Nippon Express, the programme subsidises a portion of the additional costs associated with using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) or biofuels through participating freight forwarders, with funding available until the end of March 2027. The scheme is designed to help businesses reduce CO2 emissions across their supply chains by accelerating the uptake of lower-emission transport options at scale.

Nippon Express has now been selected for the programme for three consecutive years since FY2024, continuing its NX-GREEN SAF Program and NX-GREEN Ocean Program, both of which enable customers to offset freight-related emissions through verified green transport choices. Nittsu NEC Logistics joins the programme for the first time, bringing specialist expertise in electronics and precision equipment logistics to support clients pursuing freight-focused decarbonisation through transport proposals that balance quality, delivery times and environmental considerations.

The selection reinforces the NX Group's broader climate commitments. The group has set a target of reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 50% from 2013 levels by 2030, alongside a 25% reduction in Scope 3 emissions from 2022 levels. In June 2025, those targets received Science Based Targets initiative certification as short-term SBT targets, adding independent validation to the group's decarbonisation roadmap.

The NX Group is also pursuing full carbon neutrality across all emission scopes by 2050, with ongoing stakeholder engagement central to its sustainability strategy.
