South Coast Logistics, a family-run haulier that has served the Irish market for 50 years, has been acquired by Belgian logistics and port operator Katoen Natie for an undisclosed sum. The Fermoy-based company, founded by the late Colman O’Flynn in 1975 and continued by his sons John, Richie and Pat, has become a major player in logistics for pharma, petrochemicals and food manufacturing.

The deal comes as South Coast looks to expand operations in Dublin and seek international investment to support growth. Its most recent accounts show strong momentum, with profit after tax rising to €1.7m in 2023, up from €730k in 2022.

Katoen Natie, headquartered in Antwerp, operates in more than 35 countries across sectors including petrochemicals, automotive and consumer goods. It also holds a significant stake in Indaver, a leading waste management company. The acquisition, subject to approval by Ireland’s Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, will see South Coast’s management team remain in place.

Managing director Richie O’Flynn described the partnership as an opportunity to “fast-track growth plans and unlock new opportunities” while honouring the company’s 50-year heritage. Katoen Natie said the deal strengthens its presence in Ireland, allowing both it and Indaver to leverage South Coast’s market reputation and expertise.

Patrik Naenen, business unit director at Katoen Natie, emphasised the alignment of values between the two family-owned firms, highlighting collaboration, accountability and people as central to long-term success.

The acquisition underlines the increasing role of cross-border investment in Ireland’s logistics sector, where scale, specialisation and international reach are becoming decisive competitive advantages.
