Ireland sets clear course for renewable transport fuels
Ireland’s new renewable transport fuel policy lays down a decisive roadmap for cleaner mobility, signalling both opportunity and urgency for logistics leaders. The plan ramps up renewable fuel obligations annually to reduce emissions from petrol and diesel vehicles, backed by a 19-point action plan through 2027.
Key for decision makers is the policy’s push towards advanced biofuels and non-biological renewables like green hydrogen – crucial for decarbonising hard-to-electrify sectors including HGVs and aviation. While electric vehicle adoption remains a long-term strategy, biofuels emerge as an immediate, cost-effective emissions cut for existing fleets.
By 2026, obligations will extend to rail fuels and incentivise renewable electricity use in EV public charging. With laws enforcing higher blend rates and credits for EV charging set to pass later this year, the policy reflects a strategic pivot towards integrated, cleaner transport solutions.
This is a call to future-proof operations, supply chains, and investments as Ireland positions itself to meet stringent EU climate targets.
