Hydrogen push puts Wrightbus on Europe's clean transport map
Wrightbus is accelerating Europe's transition to zero-emission transport with a €24 million delivery to German operator Saarbahn. The Ballymena-based manufacturer has supplied five hydrogen buses, the first of a 28-vehicle deal backed by Germany's Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport. These hydrogen-powered single-decks, capable of running 300km daily with rapid refuelling, are reshaping what’s possible in high-frequency public transport.
This move not only cements Wrightbus’s foothold in Germany, but also signals a larger ambition: a continent-wide hydrogen bus network supported by the company’s newly opened service centre near Cologne. With more than 130 of its buses expected on German roads by 2025, the company is turning zero-emission rhetoric into operational reality, offering long range, speed, and scale.
Clean mobility is no longer a pilot, it’s in motion. The infrastructure, funding, and tech are aligning fast, and hydrogen is emerging as a viable contender for fleet transformation.
