High cost, low volume at Grand Central Station

A £712,851 public address system at Belfast’s new Grand Central Station is under scrutiny after revelations it’s “rarely used.” Despite being positioned as a central transport hub following its £340 million opening in October 2024, the station operates as a “quiet station,” relying on screens and staff rather than regular audio announcements. Translink defends the spend, citing compliance with safety standards and the needs of a modern, integrated facility.

However, criticism is mounting. The high price tag is now being compared to the £150,000 earmarked for Irish language signage, which faced far greater public backlash. Questions are being raised about prioritisation, accessibility, and whether cost aligns with operational use—issues that strike at the heart of infrastructure value and inclusivity.
