FedEx opens new Dublin to Indianapolis freight link

FedEx has introduced a new direct air freight connection between Dublin and Indianapolis, aiming to accelerate the transport of pharmaceuticals, medical devices and other high-value goods between two leading innovation hubs.

The route, announced during the company’s first-quarter earnings and now operational, will run four days per week. By bypassing congested US East Coast gateways, shipments from Dublin can arrive a full day faster. With Ireland exporting around 68% of its goods to the US—dominated by pharma and medical equipment—the new lane enhances supply chain reliability for a critical trade corridor.

Indianapolis, FedEx’s second-largest air hub, already hosts a new 16,000-square-foot cold-chain facility with three temperature zones and a re-icing room, designed to handle sensitive biopharma and healthcare products. This investment complements Ireland’s role as a leading pharmaceutical and biopharma cluster, while also serving Indiana’s own concentration of life sciences companies.

The flight is part of FedEx’s “Tricolor” international network redesign. The strategy segments operations into three colour-coded networks: Purple for overnight express, Orange for premium freight-forwarder cargo, and White for lower-priority shipments on commercial carriers. By streamlining capacity and aligning fleets with demand, FedEx has sought to improve efficiency and customer service in a softer freight market.

Richard Smith, chief operating officer international and CEO airline, said the route reflects FedEx’s commitment to supporting fast-growing industries like healthcare, electronics and aerospace through faster and more reliable transatlantic logistics.

For Ireland’s pharma sector, the lane offers a faster and more resilient pipeline to its largest export market—potentially giving companies a sharper competitive edge in time-sensitive deliveries.
