EV incentives must triple to meet climate goals
Ireland’s transport emissions are falling too slowly to hit climate targets, according to the Climate Change Advisory Council. With electric vehicle sales slumping 24 percent last year and infrastructure lagging behind EU peers, the council is urging the Government to triple EV grants, , up to €10,000 for smaller cars, and focus on lower-income households. Despite modest public transport gains, rising car sizes and population growth are offsetting progress. Without swift and systemic changes, including scrappage schemes, interest-free EV loans, and investment in public and school transport, the sector’s 50 percent emissions cut by 2030 will remain out of reach.
